We all learned the rhyme at school: “Divorced, beheaded, died. Divorced, beheaded, survived.” But Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’s world-conquering “herstory” musical proves that there’s so much more to the six wives of Henry VIII, as each woman shares her tale – in the form of a pop concert.
These queens each take on the persona of a contemporary music diva (think Beyoncé, Adele, Britney Spears and Alicia Keys), belting out catchy songs and delivering slick dance moves, while competing to prove which of them had it the worst. Was it Catherine of Aragon, shoved aside for a younger woman? Or the constantly exploited Katherine Howard?
At the end, in an empowering twist, they decide to join forces instead. It’s a fabulous feminist message, and this witty show makes history feel totally accessible through clever parallels such as Anna of Cleves saying the King preferred her “profile picture” (painted portrait) to the real thing.

We’ve seen many incredible queens in the Six The Musical cast over the years – from West End to Broadway and beyond. This original British musical is a great showcase for emerging talent, giving each of the tight-knit cast a spotlight moment.
The current London company is no exception. It features Nikki Bentley (Wicked) as Catherine of Aragon, Thao Therese Nguyen (Miss Saigon) as Anne Boleyn, Kayleigh McKnight (Kinky Boots) as Jane Seymour, Reca Oakley (Sister Act) as Anna of Cleves, Inez Budd (Heathers) as Katherine Howard, and Janiq Charles (The Lion King) as Catherine Parr.
Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss won a Tony Award for their irresistible pop score, as did Gabriella Slade for her amazing Tudor-pastiche costumes. The show has also received Olivier and Grammy Award nominations.
You’ll find the Six The Musical queens in royal residence at the Vaudeville Theatre on the Strand in central London.

Six The Musical is unusually concise for a West End musical at just 1hr 15. That makes it ideal for newer audiences – the pop concert format is hugely accessible too – or really for anyone who likes their entertainment short and sweet. It also means you can pair a trip to Six The Musical with sightseeing or a meal out.

That’s up to the child’s parents. The theatre’s age recommendation is 10 plus, and any child under 16 needs an adult with them. The show is generally fun, upbeat and suitable for a young audience. However it does touch on darker subjects such as miscarriage and sexual harassment. This content might go over the heads of younger children, but some parents may be happy to have those pertinent conversations with them afterwards.
